Day 1: Arrive in Athens
Arrive in Athens. Private transfer with assistance to your hotel. Overnight in Athens.
Day 2: Athens
In the morning, private sightseeing of Athens with a licensed guide. Tour the city, including a visit to the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum. Free afternoon. In the evening, you will enjoy a Welcome Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Athens.
Day 3: Athens to Chios
In the morning, private transfer with assistance to the airport to take your flight to the island of Chios, the reputed birthplace of Homer and a land of deep green valleys, Byzantine mosaics, and the spectacular villages known as the Mastichochoria. These mastic villages, hidden amongst the mastic trees, can be found nowhere else in the world. Upon arrival, private transfer to your hotel. Shortly after your arrival, your 4-day rental car will be delivered to your hotel. Overnight in Chios.
Day 4: Chios
In the morning, private half day sightseeing with a licensed guide. Visit the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Modern Greek Sculpture with works by the renowned sculpture Halepas, and the Koräi Library with its impressive collection of rare books and exhibit of local costumes. Free afternoon and evening. Overnight in Chios.
Day 5: Chios
Free day to explore the island. Option: visit Nea Moni, one of the four most important Byzantine monasteries of Greece, with its remarkable frescoes and mosaics, and the medieval villages of Avgonima and Anavatos; Overnight in Chios.
Day 6: Chios
Free day to explore the island. Option: visit the Mastichohoria (Mastic Villages) where most of the mastic producers live and work. Mastic, used in chewing gum and a variety of other products including pharmaceuticals, is the main crop of the island. The Mastichohoria are wonderfully medieval in character and each has its own special site of interest: the pottery of Armolia, the unique decorative housing façades in Pirgi, and the lovely black pebble beach of Emborios. Day 7: Chios to Mytilini
In the morning, private transfer to the airport in time to catch your flight to the island of Lesvos, the birthplace of the ancient poet Sappho. Even today Lesvos is known for producing famous artists, poets, and writers. Upon arrival, meet your licensed guide in the airport, then pick up your 4-day rental car and begin your full-day private sightseeing tour of Mytiline: visit the Archaeological Museum and either the Theofilos Museum (Theofilos is one of Greece’s best-loved painters) or the Teriade Museum and Library which houses the private collection of Stratis Eleftheriades, a well-known publisher and art critic. Stop to visit the Byzantine castle walls above the town and the Hellenistic theater with excellent acoustics which once accommodated an audience of 10,000. Afterwards drive along the east coast road to your hotel in Molyvos. Overnight in Molyvos.
Day 8: Mytilini
Today, explore Molyvos, also known as Mithimna, the island’s best known resort and artists’ colony, whose medieval castle and traditional architecture give it a distinctive atmosphere and whose sites include an archaeological museum, library, and a small picture gallery. Then visit Sykamia, a picturesque village with a lot of greenery and a spectacular view facing the sea. The nearby fishing harbor is a diadem of beauty, with the crowning jewel of the church of Panayia Gorgona, built on a rock at the entrance to the harbor. Overnight in Molyvos.
Day 9: Mytilini
Free day to explore the island. Option: visit Agiassos, a traditional island village known for its pottery and woodcarving, where you will see the Ecclesiastical and Folk Art Museum and the Church of the Virgin, with its collection of old icons including one attributed to St. Luke. Then head to Agia Paraskevi, a market town with old mansions, whose nearby ruins include the ancient Aeolian temple of Napaios Apollo, the Ionian temple at Messa, and restored basilica of St. George. Nearby Kaloni is famed for its anchovies and shellfish, along with the long sandy beach at its port, Skala Kalonis. Also nearby, the Limonos Monastery has interesting frescoes, an important library, and an ecclesiastical folk-art museum. Overnight in Molyvos. Overnight in Molyvos.
Day 10: Mytilini
Free day to explore the island. Option: visit Eressos, the birthplace of Sappho, to see the Basilica of Aghios Andreas, known for its mosaics, and Skala Eressou, the lovely port with its magnificent beach. Then head to Sigri, a pretty fishing port with a lovely beach and an 18th century fortress at the western tip of Lesvos; nearby you will find the celebrated Petrified Forest, fifteen million years old, whose stony trees are unusual for brilliance and diversity of their colors. Day 11: Mytilini – Athens
In the morning, drive to the airport to drop off your rental car and take your flight back to Athens. Free time for strolling. Overnight in Athens
